The best time to tan is mid-morning or mid-afternoon — roughly two to three hours either side of solar noon — not the peak itself. In most northern-hemisphere summers that means about 09:00–11:00 or 15:00–17:00. You will tan at those hours; you will just do it with a much larger margin for error.
The reason has nothing to do with the sun being "gentler" in some vague sense. It is arithmetic.
Why the peak is the wrong target
The UV index follows a bell curve through the day, peaking when the sun is highest. That peak is solar noon, which is rarely 12:00 on your clock — daylight saving time, your position within your time zone and the season can push it past 13:00, sometimes past 13:30.
Because the UV index is linear, the shape of that curve translates directly into time:

Read the right-hand column carefully: the same total ultraviolet dose takes longer to accumulate away from the peak, but you still accumulate it. Two hours off the peak is not a free pass — it is roughly a 50 percent longer session for the same result.
So what actually improves? The margin for error. At the peak, a fair-skinned person is 20 minutes from redness; five minutes of distraction is 25 percent of the way past the limit. Three hours off the peak, the same five minutes is barely a tenth of the budget. Same tan, far less chance of ruining a week.
The second reason: melanin needs time, not intensity
Immediate pigment darkening — the colour that shows up within an hour and fades by tomorrow — is a UVA effect and does not protect you. The tan that lasts is delayed melanogenesis: melanocytes synthesising fresh melanin over 48 to 72 hours in response to UVB exposure.
That process responds to repeated, moderate stimulus. Doubling the intensity does not double the melanin; it does roughly double the rate at which you approach a burn. And a burn actively costs you tan, because damaged epidermis peels and takes the new pigment with it.
Longer at moderate intensity therefore beats shorter at peak intensity for the outcome you want.
What "mid-morning" means where you are
Solar noon shifts by location and date, so a fixed clock time is a poor rule. Two ways to find it:
- Check the hourly UV forecast for your location and find the maximum. That hour is your peak; count outward from it.
- Use sunrise and sunset: solar noon is the midpoint between them. Sunrise 06:00 and sunset 21:00 puts solar noon at 13:30, which makes the good windows roughly 10:00–11:30 and 15:30–17:00.
Both are more reliable than the "avoid 10 to 4" rule, which is a US-centric approximation that fits poorly in Europe with daylight saving, and badly in the tropics where the peak is sharper and higher.
Morning or afternoon?
For ultraviolet purposes they are close to symmetric — the UV curve is nearly the same shape either side of solar noon. Differences that do matter:
- Air temperature lags UV by two to three hours. Late afternoon is warmer than the equivalent morning hour at the same UV, so afternoon sessions feel hotter for the same dose. If heat is a concern, morning is more comfortable.
- Morning air is often clearer. Afternoon haze and convective cloud can nudge the effective index down slightly, though scattered cloud can also raise it briefly through reflection.
- Skin condition. Applying sunscreen properly and letting it settle for 15–20 minutes is easier at the start of a morning session than at the end of a working day.
Personal schedule outweighs all three. The session you actually keep beats the theoretically optimal one you skip.
By season
Summer, mid-latitudes. Peak UV often 7–9. Split the session: 20 minutes mid-morning, 20 minutes mid-afternoon, skipping the two hours around solar noon entirely.
Spring and autumn. Peak UV 3–5, and the curve is flatter. The whole middle of the day becomes workable, and the risk shifts to underestimating it — spring sun surprises people because the temperature has not caught up with the UV yet.
Winter above 40° latitude. Peak UV often 0–2. There is very little tanning to be done, and very little vitamin D synthesis either. Snow changes this: fresh snow reflects up to 80 percent of incident UV, so a bright alpine day at UV 4 can behave closer to UV 7 on exposed skin.
Tropics. The peak is higher and much sharper, and can exceed 12. The useful windows sit further from noon — often before 09:00 and after 16:00.
A workable pattern
- Find solar noon for today and your location.
- Aim for the 2–3 hour shoulder, morning or afternoon.
- Check the actual UV index at that hour — the shoulder of a UV 12 day is still a UV 6 hour.
- Set a limit before you go out, based on your skin type and the index at that hour, at roughly half of your unprotected burn time.
- Split it if you want more total exposure: two shorter sessions either side of the peak, not one long one through it.
- Judge results the day after tomorrow, not the same evening. Erythema peaks 12–24 hours later and delayed tanning takes 48–72 hours, so same-day self-assessment reliably leads to overshooting.
