There is no single UV index that is "best" for tanning, and any article that gives you one number is guessing. The honest answer is a range: UV 3 to 5 is the window where most skin types can build colour with the least burn risk, and above UV 6 the clock runs so fast that the sensible move is shorter, timed exposure rather than a longer session.
That is the short version. The rest of this page explains why the number changes depending on your skin, what actually happens at each UV level, and how to work out your own limit instead of borrowing someone else's.
What the UV index actually measures
The UV index is not a temperature and it is not a measure of how bright the day looks. It is a measure of the sun's erythemally weighted ultraviolet irradiance — ultraviolet energy weighted by how efficiently each wavelength reddens human skin. The scale was standardised by the World Health Organization, the World Meteorological Organization, the UN Environment Programme and ICNIRP, and one index unit equals 25 milliwatts per square metre of that weighted irradiance.
Two practical consequences follow from that definition:
- The index is linear. UV 8 delivers exactly twice the burning energy per minute as UV 4. Doubling the number halves your time.
- It says nothing about heat. A cool, breezy day at altitude can sit at UV 9 while a muggy 35 °C afternoon in a hazy city sits at UV 5. Skin burns on ultraviolet, not on how warm you feel — which is precisely why people get their worst burns on days that felt comfortable.
The WHO advises sun protection from UV 3 upwards. That threshold is not the point where tanning becomes impossible; it is the point where unprotected skin starts accumulating damage quickly enough to matter.
Why "the best UV index to tan" depends on your skin
Tanning and burning are driven by the same ultraviolet exposure. Melanin production is the skin's delayed defensive response to UV; erythema (the redness of sunburn) is the inflammatory injury response. You cannot get one without moving toward the other — the entire game is stopping while you are still on the useful side of that line.
Where the line sits is set by your minimal erythemal dose (MED): the amount of UV energy that produces just-visible redness on your skin roughly a day later. MED varies several-fold across the Fitzpatrick skin types, which is why the same beach on the same afternoon produces a light tan on one person and a burn on the next.
Typical erythemally weighted MED ranges, in joules per square metre, run roughly:

These are population ranges, not personal guarantees. Medication, recent exposure history, altitude and the part of the body all shift them.
Minutes to burn at each UV level
Because the index is linear and MED is a dose, unprotected time to visible redness is simple arithmetic: dose divided by rate. Using the midpoint of each range above, and unprotected skin with no sunscreen:

Read that table as a ceiling, not a target. Reaching one MED means you have reached the threshold of a visible burn — a first-degree injury. A sensible tanning session sits well under it, typically 50 to 60 percent of the number in the box, because pigment continues to develop for a day or two after you leave the sun.
So what is the practical window?
UV 1–2 — too slow to be worth planning around. You can spend an hour outdoors with little burn risk, but for lighter skin types the melanin response is weak. This is a fine level for simply being outside; it is a poor level to schedule a session for.
UV 3–5 — the useful window. Long enough that a session is measured in tens of minutes rather than a handful, short enough that a lapse in attention does not end in redness. For types I–III especially, this is where colour accumulates with the least damage per unit of tan. If you are going to pick a number, pick this range.
UV 6–7 — workable with a timer. Type III and above can still tan here safely, but the margin narrows to a quarter of an hour or so for fair skin. Set an alarm rather than trusting your judgement, and reapply sunscreen on schedule.
UV 8–10 — short sessions only. Fair skin crosses its burn threshold in under twenty minutes. Tanning is possible, but the correct pattern is a brief, timed, protected exposure, ideally split around the midday peak rather than through it.
UV 11+ — no. At extreme levels the safety margin is small enough that misjudging by five minutes costs you a burn. Nothing about the tan you gain is worth it.
There is a second reason the mid-range wins: damage does not scale with tan. Sunburn is a step change in DNA damage and inflammation, and repeated sunburn — particularly in childhood and adolescence — is the exposure pattern most strongly associated with melanoma risk. A tan built over several UV-4 afternoons and a tan built in one UV-10 hour do not carry the same cost, even if they end up the same colour.
Does sunscreen let you tan at higher UV?
Partly, and less than the label implies. SPF is measured in a laboratory at 2 mg/cm² of product, which is around two to three times more than most people actually apply. Studies of real-world application repeatedly find people using roughly a quarter to a half of the tested amount, and protection falls off faster than linearly with thickness — so an SPF 30 applied normally often behaves closer to SPF 5–10 in practice.
What that means for tanning: sunscreen extends your working time and blunts the burn, but it does not switch UV off. You will still tan through properly applied sunscreen, just more slowly — which is exactly the trade you want. The failure mode to avoid is treating SPF 50 as permission to stay out for eight hours at UV 9.
How to find your own number
- Establish your skin type honestly. Base it on how your skin reacts after a winter of no sun — burn first, tan later — not on your current colour.
- Check the live UV index for your location, not your city's forecast high. UV changes hour by hour with the sun's elevation, and cloud cover, altitude and reflective ground (water, sand, snow) all move it.
- Start at 50 percent of your table number. If type III at UV 5 gives 40 minutes, start at 20.
- Wait a full day before increasing. Erythema peaks 12–24 hours after exposure, so the sun you got this afternoon has not finished showing you its result by the evening.
- Split the time. Two 15-minute exposures either side of the peak beat one 30-minute session at solar noon for the same total dose, because they keep peak intensity lower.
